Classic Summer Stratus (California Coastal Fog)

Permalink | Comment (0) ~ Weather

Here’s a classic example of coastal fog in central/northern California.

“MODIS”:1 image centered on the “Santa Cruz Mountains”:2

From this “MODIS”:1 near real-time satellite image, you can see the stratus clouds (aka, fog) being pushed down the coast from the northwest to the southeast. The afternoon weather is great if you live in a south-facing area like parts of Marin county and or Santa Cruz, but not so good for north- or west-facing areas such as the western parts of San Francisco… unless you really like fog that is.

I don’t know the exact time this photo was taken, but it was probably in the afternoon, since most of the coast was foggy yesterday morning with clearing on parts of the coast in the afternoon.

AirPort — Mini Review

Permalink | Comment (0) ~ Apple

My Airport arrived yesterday. This morning I got it set up to stream audio from my MacBook’s iTunes to my home stereo. The set up took about a minute with no hitches. So far it’s working great. There’s a little latency in the system which is expected, but it’s pretty minor (that is, there’s a little lag between turning up the volume in iTunes and hearing the volume get louder on the stereo).

Remote audio _and_ a WiFi extender to boot! (+ printer-sharing feature)

It would be great if you could stream any audio to the Airport from the Mac instead of just from iTunes. Fortunately, “RogueAmoeba”:1 makes a product called AirFoil that enables that functionality. Nice to know that AirFoil is out there if I ever need it.

To get the Airport to act as a WiFi extender you either have to own an Airport basestation or do some work with your router. I have a Linksys WRT54Gv3, and somehow I got it to work with Airport. Now the Airport is a WiFi repeater for the Linksys. I read a bunch of stuff on the net saying you had to use third-party firmware to get this to work, but all I did was download the latest firmware from Linksys, update the router and fiddle with the Airport settings via the Mac… and somehow it worked. Guess I got lucky.

Akismet for Comment Spam

Permalink | Comment (0) ~ WordPress - plugin

I recently updated my WordPress install to 2.whatever which allowed me to set up the built-in “Akismet”:1 plug-in to control commnet spam. To get it running, all I had to do was sign up for a WordPress.com account, copy the Akismet key that WordPress.com gives you and plug that into WordPress.

So far so good. Only a couple of comment spams have made it into my moderation queue, which makes comments much more manageable.

Another Reason to Love Amazon

Permalink | Comment (0) ~ Internet

Amazon a while back released something called _yourmedialibrary_. The idea is to have a repository for support information associated your Amazon purchases.

When they first released it, it only contained information on newly purchased items. Now however, they have updated it to include your purchase history. This means, for example, that you don’t have to dig up old product manuals anymore. Just click on the digital product manual stored on Amazon. In another area of _yourmedialibrary_ Amazon stores all of the album art for CDs you have purchased. Neat.

Product manual for an old-school Samsung 256 MB MP3 player.

You can access _yourmedialibrary_ by clicking on the _My Account_ link at the top of the Amazon homepage. From there just search for “media library” and you’ll find the link on the page.
