Yahoo! for Music

Permalink | ~ Internet - music

Well, unless you have been hiding in a cave, you know by now that Yahoo! launched it’s digital-music store yesterday. Of course, you can download songs for $0.99 — just like iTunes — but more importantly, you can sign up for a subscription service for $60/year. Yahoo! calls their subscription service “Yahoo! Unlimited”:1.

Lemme see… over 1 million songs, less than $5/month, all you can eat, plays on your PC and a bunch of other _Plays for Sure_ “devices”:2, offers sharing and personalization and lets you stream all the music you want before downloading. Come on… $60/year is less than four CDs. It’s so cheap that even if you have an iPod, love iTunes, think Steve Jobs should be “czar”:3 and still use your 8-track tape player, you should subscribe just because it’s so cheap. Yeah, I stole the 8-track reference from Ian Rogers’ — a Yahoo! Music developer — “post”:6, but more on this later.

I’ll be posting more about my adventures with Yahoo! Unlimited in the future, but for now all I have to say is *Yahoo!*.

P.S. Real Networks (”RNWK”:4) down about $2 to $5.24 today.

P.S.S. Napster (”NAPS”:5) down over $2 to $3.95 today.
